Louvre Abu Dhabi

The crest of Abu Dhabi’s passage to the future

The iconic Louvre Abu Dhabi is the first universal museum in the Arab World that translates the spirit of openness of cultures. As one of the premier cultural institutions located in the heart of the Saadiyat Cultural District, the art-lovers dream displays the works of historical, cultural and sociological significance from ancient times to the contemporary era.

The design of the museum as a "seemingly floating dome structure"; its web-patterned dome allowing the sun to filter through. The overall effect is meant to represent "rays of sunlight passing through date palm fronds in an oasis." Their structural engineers realised the "floating dome" from 7,850 aluminium stars of varying sizes, which tessellate over eight layers to create a perforated roof structure that allows sunlight through to the spaces below.

First established back in November 2017, this museum is a relief, in this metropolis of soaring skyscrapers and glittering glass and steel, to be welcomed under a low-slung dome that seems to float, apparently weightless and with no obvious means of support, above a cluster of white, cuboid buildings on the seashore. It’s an extraordinary structure designed by Jean Nouvel, open to the air on all sides and constructed from an irregular honeycomb of aluminium and stainless steel that filters the sunshine into random shafts of light – a sort of star-spangled firmament that rains down into bright white pools on the granite paving beneath our feet. Imagine!

The Louvre Abu Dhabi’s latest exhibition opens 8 November 2018 till 16 February 2019 called “Roads of Arabia” which displays the rich and untold history of the Arabian Peninsula, from the dawn of civilisation to modernity. The critically acclaimed Roads of Arabia takes people on a journey around a region so often mistaken for just an empty desert. Visitors will get the chance to learn about some of the earliest inhabitants of Arabia.

After the contribution from France Museum, Louvre Abu Dhabi present a unique opportunity to combine the UAE’s bond vision of progression and openness with France’s expertise in the world of art and museum. Louvre Abu Dhabi is a universal museum, which means, it focuses on what unites us: the stories of human creativity that transcend individual culture or civilisations., times or places. And guides the museum in two collaboration of cultures to the dazzling architecture that combines from French design with Arab Heritage.
