When you’ve got the fashion world at your feet at the age of 44, would you decide to put your feet up (and perhaps, for good)? Phoebe Philo does. After running as the creative director of the Parisian maison for nearly a decade, she will be leaving Céline with (apparently) no plans to join a rival. But is it a surprise?
Having held Céline roughly 10 years at its helm, Philo has remade the label for unfussy, minimally chic, professional women. See the just-so cut of a trench miles away, menswear-inspired staples, and many of Celine’s hit bags like the Phantom, Luggage and Trio? That was Philo, driven by her own masculin-féminin aesthetic.
Follow her career over the past 15 or so years, and you wouldn’t be. In 2015, her models donned dowdy linen dresses or evening slips that had been intentionally creased – as if they were worn straight out of a suitcase, making you think of drinks by the sea; where Philo said “it’s where I long to be, more and more.”
Pheobe PhiloWhat’s next for Phoebe Philo? “She wants to take a break, as she has done so in the past” the source said, citing her three-year hiatus to spend time with her family after resigning from Chloé in 2006.
With an influence so legendary, her going away is more than just the end of an era in the fashion world. Cheers.
