Titled “Land of 1,000 Delights”, the indulgent holiday windows of Saks Fifth Avenue is full of landscapes of colorful candy and festivities. A riff on “The Nutcracker” ballet, you’ll find that Clara is clad in a pink tulle skirt whilst holding a frosted cake, frolicking with the Mouse King amongst the luscious playground filled with treats. Not enticed yet? Walk into the store’s enchanting winter wonderland, and get with it!
Depicting the ideal NYC Christmas, Tiffany & Co. is the stuff of holiday wishlist dreams. To bring their ideas to life, the jeweler created scenes from the Big Apple, but with a blue-and-white twist characteristic of a robin’s egg. It was all about the twinkle with this one, such as the strand of pearls replacing the traditional popcorn garlands, and jewels gleaming on plates of a Central Park picnic.
A holiday window that’s filled with intricately-snipped paper cutouts in patterns wonderfully constructed origamis is Galeries Lafayette’s “Arctic Christmas”. It tells an elaborate climate change-aware story of a family of polar bears, traverseing the melting North Pole in search of a new home – before finally settling at the land of Galeries Lafayette. Be sure to also check out their Christmas tree made entirely from paper, crafted by artist Lorenzo Papace.
At the upscale Piccadilly retailer, you’ll find that they decided upon a bolder way to encourage the hoilday cheer. Explicitly acknowledging the Brexit vote, Fortnum & Mason ultimately emphasized the importance of togetherness and cordiality at this crucial time. In “Together We’re Merrier”, artist Brett Ryder especially illustrated the classic arch-enemies from The Bull to the Sheep, where they came together and settled their differences.
Another retailer who went all out was Bergdorf Goodman. Dubbed “Destination Extraordinary”, the windows depict a dreamlike scene of lush, green gardens... Delirious remakes of the classic dioramas seen in natural history museums, each display takes viewers on a unique destination, with titles like The Winter Garden, The Hitch Hiker and Bird’s Eye View! Did you get to see any of them? Which one was your fave?
