A RETROSPECTIVE

Shared Reflection

Inscribed in our imaginations, this exhibition opened last 19 October 2018 up until 24 February 2019 in Guggenheim Bilbao, Spain. Which surveys four decades of production by Alberto Giacometti, one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. More than 200 sculptures, paintings, and drawings make up a show that offers a unique perspective on the artist’s work, highlighting the extraordinary holdings of artworks and archive material.

Alberto Giacometti was born in 1898 in the mountain hamlet of the canton of Borgonovo, in Switzerland. His father, Giovanni Giacometti was an impressionist painter esteemed by Swiss collectors and artists. The movement of the crowds he saw in the streets fascinated the artist. This inspired new compositions, such as Three Men Walking, which marked the first appearance of this motif in his sculpture.

The classical Greek statuary of the Cyclades that Giacometti contemplates in the Louvre impels him to explore the relationship between sculpture and the plane. He also often goes to the Ethnographic Museum and regularly reads avant-garde magazines, such as Cahiers d'art and Documents , which reflect the taste of the time for non-Western art.
