In the midst of growing uncertainty, the fashion industry has embarked on a movement in support of solidarity, human unity and inclusiveness in all kinds of different ways. @bof invited everyone during the Fashion Month to join the #TiedTogether movement, where everyone was invited to wear a white bandana as a sign to the world that you believe in the common bonds of humankind – regardless of race, sexuality, gender or religion.
Designers and creative directors have participated by incorporating white bandanas in fashion shows, photographers took photos of people wearing them, bloggers and editors shared the word, and everyone else shared on social media on how they wore it in all kinds of ways. In this fight for rights, @bof was definitely not alone in spurring activism through fashion.
“I didn’t really have dreams of doing political sweaters,” admits Rachelle MacPherson, Founder of @linguafrancanyc; a fashion line of embroidered cashmere sweaters that often featured with pop phrases. But when the anti-immigration rhetoric hit close to home, things changed. A variety of slogans were embroidered; such as “We Are All Immigrants,” “Power To The Peaceful,” and of course the “I Miss Barack” style in recent months; where profits were donated to a customer’s charity of choice; where @plannedparenthood and @aclu_nationwide being the most popular choices.
The independent retailers weren’t the only ones who grabbed the opportunity to present creative, inspiring and oftentimes humorous merchandise that everyone could become a part of; as one can also anticipate some political statement made by big name designers throughout the Fashion Month. After a procession of glorious knits, lush furt coats and elegant evening dresses, @prabalgurung had models wear white T-shirts emblazzoned with a wide array of empowering messages; with the most popular one that read “The Future is Female.”
But wait, there’s more. As you’ve probably seen in our previous #KrushWednesdays posts on Fashion Month, the house’s first female artistic director #MariaGraziaChiuri made feminism the focal point of her inaugural fashion show for @dior. With T-shirts adorning phrases like “We Should All Be Feminists,” portion of the proceeds were donated to @badgalriri ‘s Clara Lionel Foundation – one of the initiatives she was awarded for in becoming the recipient of The 2017 @Harvard Humanitarian of the Year.
