Sofia Coppola

Best Director

Many congratulations to Sofia Coppola for winning Best Director at the 73rd annual Cannes Film Festival 2017! After 56 long years, Coppola becomes the first woman to win the award; second in history of the French film festival to win the prize since 1961 with the feminist remake of the 1971 Clint Eastwood film.

Her latest film is an updated version starring Kirsten Dunst, Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning and Colin Farrell. Adapted from ‘A Painted Devil,’ it is a female-focused film that tells the story of a wounded soldier being taken in to be nursed back to health, before the story descends into a swirling mess of deceit, sexual tension and jealousy…

Kidman, who starred in The Beguiled says that she plans to work with female directors more often. “It’s very much a part of my contribution now… Pretty much every 18 months, I’m making a movie with a female director. That’s the only way the statistics are going to change.” Keen to watch the blood-soaked, pie-poisoned remake? It’ll be out in theatres on June 23!
