Olivia Palermo

Proportioned Perfection

An international style icon, Olivia Palermo is a stunning entrepreneur and style icon that has taken the fashion industry by storm. A daughter of real-estate developer Douglas E. Palermo and interior designer Lynn Hutchings, she has been beautifully raised as a native New Yorker – but she’s not to be mistaken for any negative association with a “simple socialite”. Having compiled a long list of achievements, 1968-born Palermo gained international recognition as one of fashion’s premier insiders who remains as fashion inspiration relevant to many generations today. Perhaps it is also attributed to her mother’s advice, where she was always told to never leave the house until one’s fully dressed… (Not in even sweats? Not unless it’s the gym, she says!)

Palermo was first noticed by a party photographer Patrick McMullan, where she was then signed to Special Bookings at Models One in London and Hamburg, leading to appearances in numerous campaigns before landing a lead part on reality-TV show The City. Acquiring modeling work for big name brands like Mango and Rochas, she has also co-created along with the likes of Aquazurra and Bauble Bar, as well as working with top fashion magazines like Vogue, UK, GRAZIA and Elle!

Taking the opportunity to exercise her solid standing as an iconic trendsetter, Palermo has become executive editor and creative director for OliviaPalermo.com; her very own two-time award winning fashion and lifestyle website. But she doesn’t stop there – with plenty more collaborations coming soon, look out for her first collection for Nordstrom which was launched earlier this February, done in collaboration with private-label brand Chelsea28 where 32 pieces were designed to be easy, versatile “lifer pieces”…

From fast-fashion finds to designer investment pieces, Palermo has been known to mix-and-match low and high fashion that makes up her to-die-for wardrobe. It is also so Palermo (and many of us too) to wear our favorite pieces time and time again. Who’s to say that’s a crime? If it looks good, it looks good.

“I dress for myself. Everyone should.” she was quoted in this year’s Fashion magazine, March edition.

And truly so! In another interview with British Vogue, she says that her secret to dressing well is… Tailoring. For Palermo, it’s all about keeping things in proportion, as an ill-proportioned suit on men or women are what she might say the greatest fashion faux pas. It’s all about the detail, as “there’s only a certain level of perfection one can achieve.” Gold advice.
