Considered to be one of the greatest national parks, the 19,500 km2 glorious Kruger National Park is home to an unparalleled number of animals, where Africa’s iconic safari species live out their days… With granite hills that scatter the bushes of the south, Lebombo Mountains rise from the savannah in the east, and tropical forests cut across the north, adventure awaits the adventurous!
For a more private experience, the Sabi Sand Game Reserve is a collection of privately owned reserve that stands adjacent to the Kruger National Park. Without having any fences in between, it allows free movement of the animals that come through. Sabi Sand may be the best place to view leopards in the wild, but the Timbavati Game Reserve is most famous for its white lions!
Aside from its abundant wildlife, the park is also home to hundreds of cultural heritage sites, including 130 rock art sites, as well as more than 300 archeological sites that feature history as early as the Stone Age to the Iron Ages. Recognizing the importance of conserving them due to their cultural, spiritual and historical significance, three are currently open to the public. These include: the Albasini Ruins, Masorini, and Thulamela.
Spanning almost 50 km long, the Blyde River Canyon (a.k.a. Motlase Canyon) is made up of varied rocks, with lush subtropical foliage that makes it the largest ‘green’ canyon in the world. The name ‘Blyde’ means ‘happy’ in Dutch, which was the name given to the river in 1800’s when several pioneers that made the expedition to Delagoa Bay – which is what you’ll feel when you return from seeing such a spectacular sight yourself.
