Singapore Biennale @ The Merlion Hotel, Singapore, 27 October 2016 – 26 February 2017.
On its 10th year of the Singapore Biennale, the theme “Atlas of Mirrors” aims to exhibit contemporary art where navigational tools like the atlas (a compendium of maps) enable us to set out sights further afield, in adjunction to the mirror – bringing us into that which is still so mysterious: the self, despite not always being reliable for they skew, magnify and invert what’s reflected. Combining both literal and metaphorical chatacteristics, it traces Southeast Asia’s migratory, intertwining histories and cultures.
Setouchi Triennial @ Seto Inland Sea, Japan, 8 October – 6 November 2016. Spread out over several islands and locations in the idyllic, sleepy islands of Seto Inland Sea area, the Setouchi Triennale is exhibited for several weeks over 3 seasons. The art installations have been set up in old, traditional Japanese homes and other buildings, not forgeting to showcase their own quaint beauty that serves as a tranquil context for some very creative art. Showing off its laid back charm of such incredibly unique places, some even become permanent installations.
The Universe and Art @ Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, 30 July 2016 – 9 January 2017. An ages-old fascination with the cosmos leads to a mega-exhibition at Mori Art Museum. Another brilliant creation by CGI champions @teamLab_news, highlights range from meteorite pieces, fossils and astronomical writings by Da Vinci and Galileo, all the way to contemporary art installations. Curated by @moriartmuseum ‘s director Nanjo Fumio and associate curator Tsubaki Reiko, the four sections exhibit (1) historical cosmologies, myths and religious art objects, (2) astral observations, (3) alients, genetic engineering, AI and (4) future relationships between people.
Setouchi Triennial, JapanSculpture by the Sea @ Tamarama to Bondi Beach, Sydney, 20 October – 6 November 2016.
Like so many loved large community events like ‘Opera in the Park’ and ‘Symphony Under the Stars’, the way total strangers enjoying something next to each other is too rarely displayed in a modern world where free opportunities are few. Today, it has become one of Sydney’s most popular cultural events on its 20th time running, featuring artists from 17 countries, successfully drawing crowds to the 2km-long beautiful stretch of Sydney coastline from Tamarama Beach to Bondi Beach.
Gwangju Biennale at Mudeung Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, 2 September – 6 November 2016.
With this year’s Gwangju Biennale titled “The Eighth Climate”, it refers to a world of visionary, spiritual and immaterial, with work that explores art as a social-scientific medium. As a response to the question of, “What does art do?”, it challenges 119 artists from 37 diffferent countries to create meaningful artforms with projective and imaginative qualities; that is, art with relationships to the future – produced through artistic collaborations, ranging from video installations, sculptures, photography, and many more.
