Celebrated Bags

What Makes an It Bag, an It Bag?

What makes an It bag, an It bag? Exclusivity, rather than functionality, is arguably how one can define an It bag. It becomes it, if it is unlikely that the masses can posses them and strut with one dangling off their arms. For those looking for a formula, here it is.

Grace Kelly

Soon after, the house renamed the bag “Le Kelly,” and demand for the bag skyrocketed. Today, it is priced astronomically; with plenty willing to pay thousands of dollars for the most coveted and rarest skins, like crocodile.

First, the Kelly bag. @hermes launched it the 1930s as “Le Sac a depeches,” (the dispatches bag) became an instant hit when the American-born actress-turned-Monaco-princess, @alwaysgracekelly, used it to hide her first pregnancy in 1956.

Birkin by Hermès - as you’ve probably seen, every single Hollywood starlet has been seen (or still is) prancing around with a Birkin. It was rumored that the impossibly-chic English actress and chanteuse Jane Birkin happened to have met an @hermes exec on a flight from London to Paris, where the conversation turned to her need for a roomy carry-all. And so, the Birkin bag was born in 1984!

First launched in the 1950s, it was renamed after the style-setting First Lady who favored it in 1961. It was then relaunched by @tomford in 1999, and again by Frida Gianni as the New Jackie in 2009. Keen to try how it feels like? Today, you’ll be able to find Gucci Dionysus.

And lastly, how could we ever miss the 2.55? Inspired by the straps found on a soldier’s bag, Coco @chanel decided to design a bag that freed up her hands that would have proven very practical to use during social situations. First introduced in 1929, she updated her bag in February 1955 and thus called it the 2.55 after its date of creation. Since then, versions kept popping up to look similar to double CC logo lock, called the “Classic Flaps.”

Which one do you fave and #krave?

If not feeling like a First Lady, then how about a Princess? Inspired by and named after the one and only Princess Diana, @dior produced a canework-stitched, charm-adorned bag as a gift from France’s then-First Lady, Bernadette Chirac. A unique work of art, the “Lady Dior” is imbued with the Couture spirit of Dior, a look worthy of a true lady…
