The thunderous waterfalls and dramatic cliffs at Lauterbrunner has been an inspiration to many, including many great writers and poets. Like J.R.R. Tolkein, who came up with Rivendell during one of their hikes in the area... (Get the picture?). See it all in traditional Swiss fashion; a town positioned along a crystal river, nearby one of the 72 waterfalls pouring down.
The wispy Staubbach Falls that hang over the cliff above the Lutschine River is of such ethereal beauty, gracefully starring in many postcard-perfect pictures complete with its village down below… As the waterfall plummets down 1000 feet, it forms a cascade that all seems to be lost in a spray before reaching the valley. But in the winter? Ugh. So striking in its sheer force, no doubt.
Famous for its convenient access to one of the summits of the Bernese Alps, travelers head to Lauterbrunnen as a base for their trail up the Jungfrau. Luckily for those who love a good trip on the rail, go up to the summit by train for a ride! Be ready for your heart to drop from such stunning scenery up there… Or was that altitude sickness?
Keen for that simple life? Slow down at Murren; a car-free town that’s accessible by gondola from Lauterbrunnen, and see an adorable little village with tiny main streets, fields of wild flowers and gorgeous views at every turn. Trot over to Grindelwald village too, with a name that literally means ‘a forested valley closed off from the rest of the world.’
Alternatively, go to Oeschinen Lake; a spectacular alpine lake located in the mountains above the Kandersteg village in Oeschinen Valley that’s surrounded by picturesque mountains covered in glaciers and ancient woods of pine.
For more of that blue, definitely travel to Blausee. With crystal-clear waters so transparent, and an enchanting forest surrounding it, it looks almost magical and mythical in appearance.
Oeschinen Lake (@mygreatescapes)Be in between the two charming lakes at the foot of the eternally snow-capped Jungfrau at the exclusive Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel & Spa. With two restaurant options, dine at La Terrasse’s pasta creations at the Quarante Uno, or go for cocktails and nightcaps at the Victoria bar. After all that hike & grind, why not indulge in a spa over a lush, green setting?
