Literally meaning “forest of sweet osmanthus”, the fragrantly-lined streets of Guilin is a breathtaking city with soothing sceneries and surreal rock formations. Between the sounds of the river bouncing off the majestic hills, Guilin claims to have the “finest mountains and rivers under heaven”. It’s a darling of China that’s clean and modern, with natural endowments that remain to amaze thanks to imperfect urban planning.
The remarkable landmark aged over 180 million years old, the Reed Flute Cave is a natural limestone cave with multicolored lighting. Its ink inscriptions date as far back as 792 AD in the Tang Dynasty, and has served as a tourist attraction for 1,200 years! With thousands and thousands of stalactites, stalagmites and rock formations all made up of weird and wonderful shapes, it is the largest and most scenic of the many karst caves spread across Guilin.
Another national AAAA-level scenic spot in Guilin would be the Silver Cave. Running through 12 hills, it has more than ten scenic spots that exhibit crystal clear stalactite staples that sparkle like silver in a rainbow of vibrant colors. Highlights of the cave include a 20-meter high waterfall, the “Mirror Pool” that reflects all kinds of stunning formations, 3 naturally-formed sculptures that resemble Buddha, and the “Single Column” made up of numerous twisted branches! Defo a sight to see.
Flowing 83 kilometers long from Guilin to Yangshuo, the Li River takes floaters down their blue waters through karst mountains and spell-binding river sights. Massive peak formations rise up from its banks, reaching the misty skies of Yangshuo. Paddle on a bamboo raft in the early morning and lose yourself in the most scenic section between Yangdi and Xingping. Clear blue skies, limestone cliffs... Li RiverIn Guilin, one does not need to travel by car... Take a traditional bamboo raft down the wide, green waters of the Li River from Yangshuo to the remote village of Xingping. Explore deeper into the surrounding villages and by biking all the way to Yangshuo, where you’ll be see lush jungle vegetation and plenty of outdoor activities. It’s a small but vibrant riverside town with a laid-back charm and lively social scene to boot! Best.
The blue waters of the Li River being surrounded by misty karst peaks serve as a spectacular backdrop to the contemporary performance of old Zhuang romance legend.
